Since frontier times, Native Americans have served the United
States in military service, both during war and peace. The Old Scout Cemetery is located adjacent to North Dakota Highway 1804 six miles west of White Shield on the Fort Berthold Indian
Reservation. The memorial is a lasting tribute to Native Americans who fought with Custer during the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The cemetery was moved to
the new site when the Garrison Dam was built and the bottomland flooded. Among those buried at the site are individuals who served as scouts with the
United States Army under General George Armstrong Custer, as well as veterans of World War I and World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. The site continues to
be used as a burial place to honor veterans. The serenity of the site, located atop a hill, is awe-inspiring.
